My dad and I left
home at about 10:30am, and headed for the train
station, getting the 11:03 train to London,
changing at Watford Juncion. We should have
arrived at Clapham Junction just before 1pm....
due to problems on the line just past Bletchley,
we were over half an hour late for our
connection, so had to wait for the next train
which got us to Clapham just before 2pm, with the
concert minutes away from starting. And to add to
the problems we had been travelling backwards
from Watford to Clapham, which set of my travel
sickness, and I was on the verge of blacking out
when we got to Clapham, arrived just in time!
We dashed across
the road the The Grand and found our seats, then
went in search of the toilets, returning to our
seats just in time for the concert to start.
The
Freeloaders were on first, and I happily
sang along to the tunes they played, which
started with 'Fade Away'. People were still
arriving and the audience wasn't quite ready for
the concert to begin, but the guys did a good
job. They might have got a better response if
they'd played their rockier tunes. They had to
dash off straight after their set, as they had
another gig that night back in Sheffield. A few
fuzzy pics are below, I wasn't the only one who
ended up with fuzz, even the official
photographer had some problems.
Barry
McKeever was on next, and he sang well,
but his songs didn't grab me. His image has
definately improved since Fame Academy, and the
longer hair is much better. He was confident on
the stage and was well received. Next up was
young Katie Lewis, and she also
sang well, but again I found her original tracks
unmemorable, though pleasent. Her cover of Leanne
Rimes 'How Do I Live' went down well with my dad.
Then Chris Manning graced the
stage, and got the venue jumping, starting with a
rendition of The Darkness 'A Thing Called Love'.
I was having another turn by then so unfortunetly
had to take a break. Whilst at the bar upstairs I
spotted Nick Hall and went over to say hello,
he's a very nice guy.
I didn't really
hear much of the other acts in the first half.
During the break,
now feeling a little better, I decided to go for
a wander and see if I could find Lady M. I was
sure the lady in the long red dress must be her,
and I was right, unfortunately she was trying to
track down Barry for some of his fans so we
didn't get to chat. I did get to have a chat with
Alfie and Muttimoo from the FASC though, which
was nice.
I returned to my
seat for the second half, which kicked off with Nick
Hall. I enjoyed his set, and he was very
well recieved by the fans. Pippa Fultons
group, Lady3, was next, and they strutted their
stuff on the stage. I was feeling a bit off
again, so don't really remember much. I decided
it was time to call it a day as I couldn't settle
so that was the last act that I saw.
I spotted Lady M
before leaving so said a quick goodbye, and
headed off to the train station.
We just missed the
5pm train, so had to wait for about three
quarters of an hour for the next one, but
fortunately after that the trip home went
smoothly, and I managed to sit going forward so
no travel sickness. We got home at about 8pm.
I got a little
text message from Nigel later that night saying
sorry that we hadn't had the chance to talk and
advising that they got back to Sheffield for
their other gig at 8:20pm. A mad day for the
guys...
